[Must Read] Abolition of Health Insurance Cards (Q&A)

Dear Member

In Japan, we are working toward medical digital transformation. Starting December 2, 2025, the use of the "Myna Health Insurance Card" will become the standard when using health insurance for medical treatment.

In preparation for this, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q1: After December 2, 2025, I was told that my conventional "card-type health insurance card" will be "invalid" or "unusable" when visiting a medical institution.

A1: After December 2, 2025, the conventional "card-type health insurance card" would no longer be valid.

Instead, you can use your "Myna Health Insurance Card" or "Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate" to receive health insurance coverage.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q2: Do I need to return my conventional "card-type health insurance card," which will become invalid on December 2, 2025?

A2: Please dispose of it yourself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q3: I'm using a "Myna Health Insurance Card," but I'd like to have a " Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate" just in case.

A3: Due to a government notification, this cannot be provided to everyone.

The Accenture Health Insurance Society exceptionally provides a "Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate (displayable on smartphones)" to those who cannot use the government-promoted "Myna Health Insurance Card."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q4: I would like to have a "Eligibility Certificate for Ceiling-Amount."

A4: The Ceiling-Amount will be applied without submitting a "Eligibility Certificate for Ceiling-Amount."

Starting in April 2023, online eligibility verification, which is mandatory for all medical institutions and pharmacies, will allow medical institutions to confirm the limit information. While some medical institutions require submission as a matter of custom, please inform them that the Ceiling-Amount applies even without the certificate. Issuing a certificate involves burdens such as the patient's application, receiving it by registered mail, managing it to prevent loss, and the need to return it, so we believe not having to issue it is an advantage.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q5: I was told my "Myna Health Insurance Card" cannot be used.

A5: Accenture Health Insurance Society receives My Numbers from each company and registers them in the government's online eligibility verification system.

Your Myna Health Insurance Card may be unusable until the registration process is complete.

During that time, the “Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate” will serve as your health insurance card.

For this reason, please respond promptly to any requests from your company to submit your My Number.

Q6, My child's school has asked me to submit a "Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate" to participate in a school trip or other event.

A6. In this case, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) have made known to use the "Eligibility Notification of Health Insurance" and "Insured Person's Eligibility Information displayed on My Number Portal".
